Chorong-i and Saekdong-i

Length of Contract:
12 month contract, commencing the day you start teaching. And at the end of the contract, there is the possibility of contract renewal.

Salary:
The annual salary ranges, between $28,000-$35,000CND (with the Korean currency trading at W850 to the Canadian Dollar), depending on the current currency exchange.This yearly salary includes:

  • monthly pay, which ranges between W1,500,000- W1,800,000
  • an additional 1- 1.5 million bonus which you are legally entitled to after having completed the 12 months contract
  • accommodation costs (we provide housing)
  • return-airfare reimbursement.


Work week:
The work week is generally from Monday to Saturday, where during Saturdays, classes take place only in the morning to early afternoon. Your total at-work time is usually no more than 30 hours/week.

Monthly working hours:
The instructor is normally required to perform ESL instruction for up to 6 hours a day and up to 120 hours in a four-week term according to the schedule the institute provides.

Overtime pay:
If the instructor has contributed more than 120 hours per month, he/she will be paid W10,000-W12,000, per hour additional hour.

The amount of overtime hours offered to the teacher tend to fluctuate throughout the year. This also depends on the teacher's performance. If the institute is happy with the teacher’s performance, he/she may be offered more overtime hours.

Instruction fee raises:
In the event that the Institute and the Instructor agree to renew the contract, monthly instruction fee shall be automatically raised by W150,000 in the period of one year. However, for outstanding Instructors, the Institute may offer a special raise.

Tax Breaks:
Some of our Institutes will pay the Korean Taxes for instructors. Others deduct a small amount to cover the Korean Taxes (3-5%) in accordance with the laws of the Republic of Korea.

These salaries earned overseas are generally exempt from Canada and US Federal Income tax (be sure to check with an income tax specialist). Not paying Canadian and US taxes can increase a person's spending power by as much as 30%

Housing:
To avoid the many problems related to finding accommodations, the Institute is responsible for finding a comfortable, affordable location and adequate housing. Each Instructor shall have the use of one (private) bedroom in the living accommodation provided by the Institute. The accommodation may be a two or three-bedroom apartment or a leased multi-family house, which is usually shared by one or two other foreign teachers. In addition, teachers will be provided with basic furnishings by the Institute (i.e., dining table, bed, refrigerator, stove, TV, etc.). Sanitation and heating facilities in Korea are now comparable to those in typical western countries.

Costs borne by the teacher:
The teacher will be responsible for telephone charges. In the event that the Instructor does not choose to live in the accommodation thus secured by the Institute, all of the necessary expenses will be borne by the Instructor.

Health Insurance:
The Instructor shall be covered by an insurance policy. The premium for the insurance will be borne by the Institute. Instructors will be provided with a copy of said insurance policy prior to the signing of the contract.

Airfare Reimbursement:
The Institute shall purchase for the Instructor an economy class one-way airline ticket from his/her point of origin in the U.S.A, Canada, or other points of origin, to Seoul Korea. If the Instructor purchases the airline ticket, the ticket shall be reimbursed by the Institute within the first week upon arrival. As for the return fare, the institute will offer this once the Instructor completes his/her contract.

Holiday & Vacations:
The Instructor shall observe the same national holidays that are observed by the rest of the staff at the Institute. The Instructor will normally receive ten (10) unpaid vacation days per year during the Institute’s mid-term / between-term breaks depending upon the calendar of the Institute.

Severance pay:
The Institute will pay 100% of their monthly instruction fee.
