Not This One

He chuckled heartily as he watched the bundle of cells, dividing and dividing again. It was like nothing he'd ever known, watching as a life form was created. It was hard to imagine that this jumbled up bundle of stuff would, in a few weeks, be a human baby. It would eventually be him.

"Hello, dearest." The voice behind him caused him to spin around. It was Earth Mother. He smiled.

"Hello Mother. I'm just watching my body develop. I can't believe that life starts from this." He turned back to look at the little ball of activity. But wait, did the activity seem to be slowing? What was happening?

"Dearest, I came to tell you that there has been a change. You won't be going there." The Divinity moved toward him, enveloping him in her warmth and caring.

"But why, Mother? She wants me; she's looking forward to my arrival already. Won't she be terribly hurt? Won't she miss me?" He turned away from Her, looking at the woman in whose body his body was growing. Except that it wasn't growing anymore, it lay there, now, motionless.

"Perhaps she will feel pain at your loss, but she will heal and she will move on and hopefully she will be more prepared when next her body quickens. Her life is rather tumultuous just now, dearest, and there are some issues that rule her, rather than the other way around. Perhaps she will see things differently now, reexamine her priorities. We can but try. I'm sorry, dearest, I know you are disappointed."

He tried to prod the little bundle, to get the cells moving again, to get them back to work creating his body. He moved back and sighed. It was over. Disappointed, yes, he was that.

"But, Mother, how do you know that this is what is best? How do you know that I wouldn't make her life better, put her back in control? How can you know? It's not fair." He moved away from the Divinity, clearly upset and sulky. She laughed huskily.

"Dearest, do you forget yourself? Do you forget to whom you speak? You speak to the One, to your Mother, to your Father, to your Creator. Of course I know. I am privy to all aspects of life. Of course my understanding is deeper than yours at this stage of your existence. I hope that someday you will understand and forgive me for this. I love you, and I love her, too much to put either of you through the stress that a new baby would put on her life at this point." The Divinity moved to envelop him again. "There will be a mommy for you, dearest, soon. I promise you. But now is not the time for this one." Together they watched as the woman's body began to reject what had been the beginnings of a baby just moments ago. The Divinity expanded to envelop her, also, to give her what comfort she would accept. His ties to the woman severed, he moved off into the ether to await his mommy.
