Lantern slide of Lake of Killarney

Lake of Killarney, collection of Ints Plampe.

The first lantern slides were created before the invention of photography by painting transparent images on glass which were projected onto the wall using a light source such as the magic lantern.

Later photographic processes were discovered that created transparent images on glass plates.

The green planet in the Green Planet image which can be viewed in the slide show from the home page, was painted with transparent ink on a glass plate, exposed on photographic paper in the darkroom, digitized, and projected onto the Net.

Think of the Internet as Phantasmagoria: a magic lantern show.
