The Catastrophic Result of Uninformed Decisions

During his public speech about the privatization of public electricity in Ontario, the Premier said something like this: "we do not know how the price of electricity will be after privatization. It could be higher or lower, we do not know yet".

My argumentation is that if you do not know the result of your decision, the best thing that you can do is to make a scientific evaluation, research or study before making your decision. If, eventually, you cannot afford to spend some money for research because you need it for corporate and private schools tax cuts, the best decision could be to do nothing and leave it like that. If, eventually, the Premier wanted to continue his "Common Sense Revolution" and to make revolutionary decisions as he made many so far, he should have been made at least a common sense judgement (not revolutionary this time) taken into consideration the experience of our neighbours from the south. We already know that their electricity system is in crisis, and consequently the electricity price is much higher than ours. If you open up and connect your electric system with such a system where the price is higher due to the demand and supply, the basic knowledge of a free market tells you that the price is going up and never down. In addition, we have already known the bad experience of the province of Alberta on this matter, right here in Canada.

So, was not it enough evidence that could give the Premier at least a concern about his decision? Don't we have enough stress in our day-by-day life and we need more of it? Of course, we have enough, but the Premier does not know yet that the stress is the cause of the most of human diseases and he does not care about it. However, he is concerned about the increase of the health care cost, and his government intends to reduce it by privatization the health care system, too. This kind of measure will create for sure other sources of stress that could lead to more illnesses and deaths. Consequently, the only benefit from this kind of decisions made without a scientific foundation is that we will die earlier, and the cost of the health care can be at least maintained, if not reduced!

If the current Ontario government is not concerned about the higher price of electricity and its consequences, it appears that it is concerned about something else more important for its policy. This conservative government knows very well, but it does not want to tell as, that the electrical energy is so important to our lives and economy like almost our food that we put on table every day. In a few words, it is a big business, and this government does not like as it is now because they cannot control it the way they want to. That's because the rich people and big corporations who brought this government in power cannot have access to and control it. Moreover, they told as that it is a public monopoly and it is not good for our economy because a private company can manage it more efficient. For the rich peoples' pockets, not ours of course. They tried it before by private management of water testing for the Ministry of Environment in some areas like Walkerton. They managed it more efficient and saved some money, but we know already the result: seven deaths and thousands of illnesses. Of course, we cannot die if the price of electricity is going up, but we could die due to the effect of stress created by this increase. There are already some medical reports which mentioned that the main cause of the stroke, for example, is the stress.

Maybe the Ontario Power Generation looks like a public monopoly, but as long as the price of electricity was stable for 30 years or so, it has worked for sure in the advantage of consumers and businesses, big or small, as well. If the conservative government sustains that there are some internal problems inside of this monopoly, it does not necessarily mean that it must be privatized. There are other methods, too, for improving its efficiency. But if they open the door for the private sector, they do not know that the public monopoly will be transformed little by little in a private monopoly.

If we take into consideration all ideas and actions of the "Common Sense Revolution" taken by this government so far, we can notice that the Harris government did not like anything which was public. This government has already dismantled the public education system, the public social assistance system, the public social housing system, the public transit system, and so on. Now, it is the turn of Ontario Power Generation which is public, too. But, before stepping down, the Premier of the "Common Sense Revolution" could not resist to make one more favour to the rich people and big corporations who paid big bucks for his reelection campaign. He mentioned, however, during his last speech on the floor of the Legislature that he could not "fly on corporate jets" anymore. However, if the next Premier would decide to continue the "Common Sense Revolution" and fly on corporate jets, it could be the turn of the public health care system.

But the big risk for making important decisions for a social system without a scientific study or research is so huge that few of us could ever imagine. Did you ever think that maybe there are some smart guys on the south who are thinking how to get your resources and take control of your lives? What do you have to say if they are thinking something like this: if we cannot get their water now, let's begin with electricity first. We just need to create an electricity crisis to lure them to privatize their system and sell their electricity to us. In addition, we have to show them that responsibility for electricity is moving from the public sector to private industry with excellent results, like in one of our states where competition saved billions of dollars. No wonder that the Premier mentioned such a great result in his last "Report to Ontario Taxpayers", but nothing about the problems of other states and provinces.

For achieving such a result, maybe they are thinking further: we made some progress with their lumber, and we saw that it is a good business. Their lumber and electricity is cheaper, and we can make it even cheaper by imposing some taxes even if this trade is under NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement). We could produce more electricity but NAFTA is working fine in our best interest, and we can do whatever we want because we are the most powerful nation on earth. In addition, we have already the measures and power to control their currency, and the best our interest is to determine them to adopt our dollar. Before that, we have to push their currency even deeper to the ground zero. Moreover, our big corporations can easily take control of their financial and electrical systems by normal business practices, like takeover and mergers. In the end, we can tell them very frankly: You know what? We are controlling your financial system by our dollar, and we can shut down your entire economy by a simple electrical power switch. What we really need and cannot produce in big quantity is water. So, you have no choice but to give us some water now. If you do not want to, we have to tell you that you are not longer an independent state, and you could erect now a monument for your own ground zero commemoration and commemorate the disappearance of Canada as an independent state. And because you did not want to erect a monument for our ground zero commemoration and commemorate it together, we have to punish you a little bit more by forcing you to erect now a monument for celebrating our victory for "North American Unity".

The above text could be entitled "North American Globalization", a simplified and partial version of Globalization. Back to To Whom It May Concern

P. S. My personal opinion is that we do not have to wary about water, food and electricity because there is so much water and soil on earth that we could live in peace hundreds of years from now on. The problem is that we did not learn from history yet how to use them and do not know how to be organized that all nations and all of us could benefit!
