CONCERNED ABOUT YOUR CHILD'S SPEECH AND LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT?

If you have concerns about your child's development, it is worthwhile consulting a speech-language pathologist. Many community hospitals have Speech/Language clinics that provide service to preschool-aged children. In Ontario, a referral by a doctor is usually required to get an appointment. Most pediatricians will recognize speech and language problems and will initiate referrals. There are instances, however, when parents are reassured that their child will "outgrow" their difficulties and are discouraged from pursuing a referral. Parents are often right and thus are encouraged to persist with their doctor or if necessary find a doctor who will make the referral. Another option is to contact the clinic in your neighbourhood for advice.

Hospital clinics in Ontario frequently have waiting lists for service. Another option is to contact a Speech-Language Pathologist in private practice to arrange for an assessment. Names of private therapists can be obtained from professional associations, such as OSLA (Ontario Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists). Employers may cover the cost of an assessment through their benefit plan.

In Ontario, school boards employ Speech-Language Pathologists to meet the communication needs of students. Teachers sometimes identify potential speech and language problems and initiate referrals. Ask the principal at your child's school about speech/language services available at school.

You can help your child to develop good speech and language skills by being a good speech and language model. Use language that is at their level. Rephrase what they have said, making it into a more correct or adult form. Expand what they have said to show them how to increase their utterance length and to share in their interests. Be an equal partner in talking: follow their lead and let them choose the topic. Take turns. Get down to their physical level and be face to face. Use gestures and facial expressions to help them understand. Have fun!
