Assume the class of 30 students in GWI0AI represent the entire population of the world. Estimate how many of the 30 students would be counted in the following questions.
1) How many in the class would live to age 74 ?
2) How many in the class would die before the age of 50?
3) How many in the class would live in a country with a per capita income less than $600/year?
4) How many in the class would be so malnourished that their growth would be stunted ?
5) How many in the class would suffer from some nutritional deficiency ?
6) How many in the class know how to read ?
7) How many in the class never attend school in their lifetime ?
8) How many in the class go to college?
9) How many in the class live in safe, sturdy homes ?
10) How many in the class have access to safe, clean drinking water ?
11) How many in the class control 80% of the world's farmland ?
12) How many in the class are North American ?
13) How many in the class are Chinese ?
14) How many in the class are African
1) Two members of the class would live to age 74 or 6% of the world's population.
2) Nine of us would die before the age of 50 or 29% of the world's population.
3) 17 of us would be so poor as to make under $600 per year. 55% of the world's population fall into this category.
4) Two of us would have our growth stunted by malnutrition or 7% of the world.
5) 10 of us would suffer from some sort of nutritional deficiency such as scurvy (lack of Vitamin C or Kwashiorkor, a lack of protein and carbohydrates, or other maladies. This represents 34% of the world's population.
6) Only 9 of us (or 30% of the world)would know how to read. This statistic is very serious when aid programs are attempted. If contraception programs or sanitation and hygiene programs are started, the fact that many people cannot read hinders the success of the program.
7) Six of us (or 20% of the world)never get the chance to attend school. It is this result which has made education a high priority in the developing countries.
8) None of us (or 1% of the world) would go to college. The number is so small that zero best represents it. It is a number like .03. So those of you who actually get the chance to go to college/university are the world's elite.
9) Only 6 of us (or 20% of the world)live in safe sturdy homes. Many homes are what we would call temporary shelters made of mud, straw, tarpaper, cardboard or any other scrap materials.
10) 15 of us (or 50% of the world) have access to clean, safe drinking water. This can be a misleading statistic since clean is a relative word. Some scientists would say that our water from Lake Ontario is not safe.
11) Only 1 of us (or 3% of the world) control 80% of the farmland. This makes it extremely difficult to disperse much needed land to the poor so they can grow their own food.
12) Two of us would be North American. or 6% of the world.
13) 7 of us would be Chinese or 25% of the world.
14) Three of us would be African or 11% of the world.
