OCEAN DUMPING
THE CAUSES OF OCEAN POLLUTION
There are many factors that are responsible for the current state of
our ocean. The pollution can come from many different sources, including
Military, trade fishing, and recreational ships. Ships are responsible
for dumping raw sewage in to the water as well as plastics and other non
bio-degradable products in to the ocean. In many cases these non
bio-degradable plastics are washed on to shore were they become
entangled in the beaks of seabirds, or eaten by marine or sea animals.
Although ships receive the most attention for ocean dumping industries
situated on harbor front lands are also responsible. In many cases
these industries dump chemicals into the water way as a quick form of
disposal. A major culprit in past years were the paper mills and related
plants. They would release ‘sludge’ as well as dyes and chemicals into
the surrounding waters unsure of the potential damage or pain that could
be caused.
Many activists would argue that these are not causes but rather
symptoms of a greater cause, greed, selfishness, and laziness. This is
the end result of years of ignorance, a belief that sewage and waste
simply disappeared after it was dumped. It is also due to the lack of
strict regulations, enforcing the amount and properties allowed in
sewage dumping.
