What qualifications do I need?

Original copies of your medical degree - Certificate of licentiate of the Medical Council of Canada (LMCC) - Certificate in Family Medicine or Specialty or satisfactory assessment by the College and satisfactory completion of 2 years of accredited and approved postgraduate training (at least one year in Canada)

What exams do I need to write?

Evaluation Exam - Qualifying Exam Part 1 - Qualifying Exam Part 2 - Specialty or Family Medicine Exam.

What are the residency/immigration requirements?

You must be able to submit evidence of legal entitlement to live and work in Canada. Landed Immigrants, Convention Refugees and Canadian citizens may apply.

What are the language requirements?

You must be able to communicate in English.

How much does it all cost?

Evaluating Exam $1000
Qualifying Exam Part 1 $ 650
Qualifying Exam Part 2 $1000
Registration fee $ 200 (addditional $100 if you are a specialist)
Annual License fee $ 650

What else do I need?

Certificates of Standing or Certificate of Professional Conduct from the licensing body in the area that you hold/held a full or educational license - CV with professional appointments - Names and addresses of 3 physicians as references, preferably ones practicing in Canada - Recent photo - Birth certificate or other document satisfactory to the Registrar - You may be required to have a personal interview.

What are the steps I need to take?

Write the exams - Complete Canadian residency - Obtain certificate in Family Medicine or a Specialty - Obtain application package - Gather all your documents and certificates - Submit application, documents, and registration fee

 

Temporary license
(This license does not allow you to engage in independent practice - it is intended for public service or academic positions)

What qualifications do I need?

Be a graduate of medicine from a university or school of medicine approved by the Council (a school listed in the World Health Organization directory) - Postgraduate training appropriate for the practice and approved by Council (usually Canadian or USA)

What exams do I need to write?

Must pass exams acceptable to the Council (usually the Evaluating Exam or the USMLE exam)

What are the residency/immigration requirements?

You must be able to submit evidence of legal entitlement to live and work in Canada. Landed Immigrants, Convention Refugees and Canadian citizens may apply.

You must be able to communicate in English.

Evaluating Exam - To be competitive you may need the Qualifying Exam Part 1 and Part 2
(You have 3 years to pass the Qualifying Exam Part 1 and 5 years to pass the Qualifying Exam Part 2)

Clinical Assessment $3500-5000 (at the University of Manitoba - includes travel and accommodation)

What else do I need?

Be supported in writing by a fully registered member sponsor (a doctor in practice in Nova Scotia) - Must comply with any other conditions that the Council may from time to time prescribe - If you have no Canadian or US experience or training, you must be interviewed by the Registrar and have a formal clinical assessment at the University

What are the steps I need to take?

Write the exam(s) - Get a letter of support from a physician in Nova Scotia - Obtain the application package - Gather all your documents and certificates - Submit application, documents, and registration fee - Complete the clinical assessment
