Child Advocate Worker (Relief)

Position:
Child Advocate Worker (Relief)

Responsibilities:
To support children living in the shelter by performing duties as required.

Hours of Work:
Approximately 10-15 hours per week as necessary to support programming -
variable shifts.

Qualifications:
* Community College diploma in Early Childhood Education, Child and Youth Worker or equivalent or University Degree in child development
* First aid certification
* Experience working with young children and programming for them
* Excellent verbal and interpersonal skills
* Crisis intervention skills
* Able to work cross-culturally with very diverse individuals
* Knowledge of woman assault and its effects on women and children
* Available to work days, evenings, weekends and holidays
* Ablity to speak various languages (Tamil, Twi, Somali or Chinese) preferred

Wages:
$14.49 per hour plus 11% cash in lieu of benefits

Children Program / Volunteer Coordinator

Yorktown Shelter for Women offers emergency shetler for abused women with or without children.  Services include counselling, referrals, 24 hour crisis, advocacy, community outreach and children's programming.

Position:
Children Program / Volunteer Coordinator

Responsibilities:
* Providing support to and supervising child Advocate Workers in the day to day operations of the Children's Program, including COPE
* Evaluating the Children's Program
* Recruiting and supervising volunteers
* Community networking
* Developing new groups, activities and programs within the children's program
* Ensuring that programming reflects teh culturally diverse and developmental needs of the children in the shelter

Qualifications:
* Community College diploma in Early Childhood Education, Child and Youth Worker or equivalent or University Degree in Child Development
* Five years experience working with children (preferably in residential setting)
* Two years supervisory experience in children's programming
* Knowledge of community resoruces for children and parents
* Demonstrated knowledge of woman assault and its effects on child witnesses
* Experience working in culturally diverse settings, including an understanding of cross-cultural parenting issues
* Experience working with and supporting volunteers
* An ablity to speak a second language (in addition to English) is preferred
* Demonstrated oral/written communication skills
