Review:This is the second CD
(following
The Route)
to team trumpeter
Chet Baker
and altoist
Art Pepper,
two masterful players who had similar (and rather strange) life stories,
with so many ups and downs as to be almost unbelievable. None of the chaos
of their lives appears in the fine music they created. This sextet session
(which has five
Jimmy Heath
compositions in addition to two originals from
Pepper)
also contains spots for excellent solos by tenor-saxophonist
Phil Urso
and pianist
Carl Perkins.

Also formerly put out as
Playboys,
this 1998 CD reissue teams trumpeter
Chet Baker,
altoist
Art Pepper
and tenor saxophonist
Phil Urso
with the rhythm section of pianist
Carl Perkins,
bassist
Curtis Counce
and drummer
Larance Marable.
Although ostensibly a West Coast jazz session, the music is very much in
the hard bop genre.
Jimmy Heath
contributed five of the seven selections (including "C.T.A." and "For
Minors Only"), while
Pepper
brought in the other two songs.
Baker
and
Pepper
had parallel up-and-down lives full of turmoil, but their playing on this
outing is quite consistent, hard-swinging and enjoyable; they blend
together surprisingly well. Easily recommended to straight-ahead jazz
collectors who do not already own the music. -- Scott Yanow, All Music
