Review:The performances heard on this
Evidence CD were originally put out by Japanese labels. The first six
selections feature the potentially explosive quartet of drummer
Elvin Jones, altoist
Art Pepper (on four of the numbers),
pianist
Roland Hanna and bassist
Richard Davis. Unfortunately few sparks
occur, a bass-drum feature on "Pitter Pat" is a bit dull and
Pepper never really cuts loose. However
the two remaining tracks are much more memorable.
Jones' regular quintet of 1978 (with
Frank Foster on tenor and soprano,
Pat LaBarbera on tenor, guitarist
Roland Prince and bassist
Andy McCloud) stretches out in exciting
fashion on the 15½-minute "E.J. Blues" and a 26½-minute exploration of two
of the movements from "A Love Supreme." Those performances (which contrast
Foster's
Coltrane-inspired tenor with
LaBarbera's
Sonny Rollins-influenced playing) make
the CD worth getting
