Review:Other than a set for
Bill
Berry's Beez label, this obscure
instrumental Japanese LP was trumpeter
Jack Sheldon's first as a leader
since 1969. Mostly of interest due to the pairing of
Sheldon with altoist
Art
Pepper, the Los Angeles date
(with pianist
Milcho Leviev, bassist
Tony Dumas and drummer
Carl Burnette) finds the group
mostly sticking to jazz standards (including
Gigi
Gryce's "Minority," which is
mistakenly attributed to
Pepper). Few fireworks occur,
although the musicians play well, particularly on
Pepper's "Angel Wings," "Jack's
Blues" and "Broadway." -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
