| Review:Altoist Art Pepper was at the beginning of his successful (if relatively brief) seven-year renaissance when he performed at the concert documented on this Storyville CD. Recorded six months before his first official comeback record (Living Legend), the great altoist is heard playing with a quartet comp of Tommy Gumina on polychord (an organ-sounding accordion), bassist Fred Atwood and drummer Jimmie Smith. Pepper is in excellent form on lengthy versions of his "Foothill Blues," "I'll Remember April," and "Cherokee," and is quite passionate on a four-and-a-half-minute version of "Here's That Rainy Day." Gumina mostly stays out of the way, and the audience sounds quite happy to get an opportunity to hear the legendary altoist sounding so strong. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |
