Review:This
is a ballad CD that puts the emphasis on
Chet Baker's
vulnerable vocals. Only one selection ("Trav'lin' Light") was previously
released when this set came out in 1995, all of the songs (with the
exception of the two versions of "Little Girl Blue") clock in around the
three-minute mark and just six of the 13 tunes (five of which are
instrumentals) have any of
Baker's trumpet.
Backed by guitarist
David Wheat and
bassist
Ross Savakus,
Baker largely
sticks to the melodies (both instrumentally and vocally) with the main
improvisations taking place in his phrasing rather than his notes.
Although he was rarely in better voice than during this period, those
listeners who think of
Chet Baker as
chiefly a trumpeter are advised to look elsewhere. -- Scott Yanow, All
