Review:This
valuable Savoy LP, put out by Muse in 1986, has 14 previously unissued
alternate takes taken from two
Art Pepper
sessions. The great altoist is heard with a quiet West Coast trio (pianist
Russ Freeman,
bassist
Bob Whitlock
and drummer
Bobby White)
and with a quintet co-starring tenor saxophonist
Jack Montrose.
The
Pepper-Montrose
matchup is particularly exciting but
Pepper
is actually in fine form on all of the performances; it is difficult to
believe that these were all rejected takes. The remainder of the two
productive sessions were released on a two-LP set around the same period
titled
Discoveries,
and most of this music (particularly the alternate takes) has not been
reissued on CD yet. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |
