Recorded Live in Performance At Maiden Voyage(Los Angeles)
Personnel:Art Pepper(as,cl)George Cables(p)David Williams(b)Carl Burnett(d)
Review:Altoist Art Pepper's 1981 appearances at Los Angeles' now-obsolete Maiden Voyage club were fully documented, resulting in three LPs and a greatly expanded program that is included on Pepper's massive "complete" Galaxy box set. This particular release, the only one thus far to be made available as a single CD, has Pepper and his quartet (with pianist George Cables, bassist David Williams and drummer Carl Burnett) performing "Roadgame" (an alternate take has been added to the CD reissue), "Road Waltz," an intense "Everything Happens to Me" and "When You're Smiling"; on the latter, Pepper switches to clarinet. Although only a year away from his death, the great Art Pepper was still very much in his prime for this memorable outing. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

A '92 CD reissue of another sparkling late '80s session from alto saxophonist Art Pepper, this one a quartet date with a blues theme. Pepper's jagged, turbulent solos expressed the rage and despair he felt knowing he was nearing the end and still had many things he wanted to say. He's backed by what had become his regular band: pianist George Cables, bassist David Williams, and drummer Carl Burnett. -- Ron Wynn, All Music Guide

The music on this LP is from altoist Art Pepper's well-documented engagement at the Maiden Voyage club in Los Angeles in 1981. All of the music has since been reissued on CD as part of his giant 16-CD set. Pepper, pianist George Cables, bassist David Williams and drummer Carl Burnett are heard at their best on "Allen's Alley," and "Samba Mom Mom." A special highlight is a passionate duet by Pepper and Cables on "But Beautiful." -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
