| In 1960, Art Blakey led one of
the greatest versions of his Jazz Messengers. The particular edition heard
on this CD features three distinctive soloists (trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenor
saxophonist Wayne Shorter and pianist Bobby Timmons). Highlights of The Big
Beat include Timmons's "Dat Dere" and Shorter's "Lester Left Town" in
addition to a colorful arrangement of "It's Only a Paper Moon," heard in two
versions. A gem. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide Nobody supplied a bigger beat in jazz than Art Blakey. This Blue Note date from 1960, appropriately titled THE BIG BEAT, documents one of the best line-ups that Blakey and his Jazz Messengers ever had. With Lee Morgan and Wayne Shorter on the front line and Bobby Timmons and Jymie Merritt in the rhythm section with Blakey, this group defined hard bop with soulful swing, commanding solos and tight ensemble arrangements. Only Miles Davis and John Coltrane could also claim to lead groups of equally powerful stature. Wayne Shorter held the spot of musical director during his tenure with the Messengers and he contributes three gems to this session. His shuffling "The Chess Players" opens the album with a slow grooving stroll. The pace is quickened with his bouncing "Sakeena's Vision," featuring a driving solo section and plenty of prodding from Blakey. Also included is Shorter's superb swinger "Lester Left Town" which would become a Messengers performance favorite. Timmons' contribution is his legendary blues "Dat Dere," a gospel-flavored groover that gets a signature performance here. Finally, the standard "It's Only A Paper Moon" is given a daunting new arrangement and an extra bonus take to close out the disc. |

| Taken from the same sessions that resulted in A Night in Tunisia, this fine CD features the 1960 version of The Jazz Messengers starring trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter and pianist Bobby Timmons. The title cut is the most impressive performance, but this excellent program of high-quality hard bop also allows listeners to hear three obscure Wayne Shorter compositions and Lee Morgan's forgotten "Johnny's Blue." -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide | ||

| The lengthy title track on this CD easily overshadows the rest of the program for it is one of the most exciting versions ever recorded of Dizzy Gillespie's "A Night in Tunisia." Trumpeter Lee Morgan (then only in his early 20s), tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter, pianist Bobby Timmons and bassist Jymie Merritt formed one of the strongest of the many versions of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and are actually in fine form during the remainder of the satisfying (if anticlimatic) set. The CD augments the LP by adding a version of "When Your Lover Has Gone" and an alternate take of "Sincerely Diana" to the original program. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide | ||

| Art Blakey's 1960 Jazz Messengers recorded so many excellent records that the "good" rating given this LP is relative. With trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter and pianist Bobby Timmons all receiving plenty of solo space, the band is in fine form on Hank Mobley's "The Opener," Lee Morgan's "What Know" and two standards. Little unexpected occurs, but fans of hard-swinging jazz will want to pick up both volumes in this series. | ||

| Recorded from a radio broadcast in Sweden, this LP finds The Jazz Messengers near their peak. This edition of the band (with trumpeter Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter on tenor and pianist Bobby Timmons) was the most celebrated and most frequently recorded of all the versions of The Jazz Messengers. This album (which includes strong versions of "Blues March," "Lester Left Town," "Along Came Betty," "A Night in Tunisia" and Wayne Shorter's lesser-known "The Summit") is easily recommended as a strong example of their legacy. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide | ||

| Nearly every
recording by Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, particularly during the 1958-61
period, is well worth acquiring by fans of hard bop. This 1995 CD from the
Swiss label TCB features a particularly strong edition of Blakey's group,
with trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenor-saxophonist Wayne Shorter, pianist Bobby
Timmons, bassist Jymie Merritt and the drummer/leader. Together they perform
"Now's the Time," two of Shorter's tunes ("Lester Left Town" and "Noise in
the Attic"), Morgan's "Kozo's Waltz" and Timmons's recent hit "Dat Dere."
Recommended. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide The 1960 version of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers (which consisted of the drummer/leader, trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter, pianist Bobby Timmons, and bassist Jymie Meritt) was very well documented. This 1996 CD releases for the first time music from the second half of a Geneva concert by the band. One can argue that these performances of "It's Only a Paper Moon," "'Round Midnight," Wayne Shorter's "The Summit," "A Night In Tunisia" and Timmons' "This Here" do not add that much to the Messengers' vast legacy, but the music is really too good for hard bop fans (even those with many other versions) to pass up. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |

An absolutely wonderful 1961 set from Blakey and company, who demonstrate here how to be note-perfect without leeching away the emotion of a performance. Aside from Blakey's divine drum work, the standouts include Jaymie Merritt's trippy bass fingerwork, and Wayne Shorter blowing his heart out on tenor sax. Beautifully remastered, well worth having in this edition. -- Steven McDonald, All Music Guide |

With trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter, trombonist Curtis Fuller and pianist Cedar Walton (all of whom would be major names in jazz for the next 30 years) taking consistently excellent solos, it is not surprising that this CD (which is highlighted by "Moon River," "Bu's Delight" and "Backstage Sally"), as with all of the other recordings by this group, is easily recommended to lovers of hard bop. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

| This
live set from 1962 features Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers in one of
their strongest line-ups. Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter and Curtis Fuller
form a stunning front line that is expertly propelled by the rhythm section
of Blakey, Cedar Walton and Jymie Merritt. Free from the constraints of the
studio, the tight ensemble arrangements for which the group is famous are
expanded upon here and performed with even greater energy. As expected,
Blakey's driving leadership and assertive drumming incites memorable
performances from his men and an enthusiastic response from his audience. Curtis Fuller's lilting arrangement of the childhood favorite "Three Blind Mice" opens the set with jazzed-up harmonies and explosive comments from Blakey. The standard ballad "Blue Moon" also gets an updated arrangement, this time from Shorter, and a mournful performance by Hubbard in the lead. The original compositions, however, get the most energized readings here as Walton's blistering "Plexis" and Hubbard's "Up Jumped Spring" are the highlights of the set. Also included in this volume are a second take of the latter and a previously unreleased performance of Shorter's "Children Of The Night," one of his most vigorous compositions.

| Art Blakey led many strong versions of his Jazz Messengers over a 30 year period. This particular unit featured five young greats: trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, tenor-saxophonist Wayne Shorter, trombonist Curtis Fuller, pianist Cedar Walton and bassist Reggie Workman. On the CD reissue (which adds a pair of alternate takes to the original Lp program), the group is heard in prime form with the highlights including "Caravan," "Thermo" (two versions are included) and "Skylark." -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide | ||

| Art Blakey's 1963 Jazz Messengers (which included trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, tenor-saxophonist Wayne Shorter, trombonist Curtis Fuller, pianist Cedar Walton and bassist Reggie Workman in addition to the drummer-leader) was one of his finest. The CD reissue (which adds two songs to the seven on the original Lp) has plenty of strong moments, particularly on "Ping-Pong," Shorter's feature ("I Didn't Know What Time It Was") and the memorable "One By One." This high-quality hard bop session is recommended. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide | ||

| Drummer Art Blakey took time off from his busy schedule as leader of The Jazz Messengers to participate in this quartet session with saxophonist Sonny Stitt, pianist McCoy Tyner and bassist Art Davis. Although this session was under Blakey's leadership, Stitt (on both tenor and alto) emerges as the main soloist, playing his trademark bebop lines with creativity and typical enthusiasm. | During most of 1961-64 Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers (except for bassist Reggie Workman replacing Spanky DeBrest) managed to keep the same personnel, a remarkable feat when one considers the strong talent (which included trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, trombonist Curtis Fuller, Wayne Shorter on tenor and pianist Cedar Walton). Free for All was this particular group's last recording before Freddie Hubbard went out on his own, and it includes lengthy versions of two Shorter tunes, Hubbard's "The Core" and the standard "Pensativa." Fine music. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide | ||

| In 1964, trumpeter Lee Morgan rejoined The Jazz Messengers, replacing his original replacement, Freddie Hubbard. The hard-swinging style of this influential unit remained unchanged with drummer/leader Art Blakey still insisting on distinctive solos and constant new material. Typically, the music on this fine LP consists of five then-recent compositions by bandmembers, one apiece from Morgan, pianist Cedar Walton ("When Love Is New") and tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter and two from trombonist Curtis Fuller. | After six years of very consistent personnel (with only a few gradual changes), Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers in 1965 were in a state of transition. This particular LP found both Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard making farewell appearances on trumpet, pianist John Hicks and bassist Victor Sproles joining up as short-term members and veteran Lucky Thompson being well featured on both tenor and soprano sax. The music is more relaxed than usual but still contains some of that distinctive Jazz Messengers fire. This rare set is worth searching for. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide | ||

| Few jazz followers would think of trumpeter Chuck Mangione and pianist Keith Jarrett as former members of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, but in 1966, they both worked in the drummer's classic hard bop unit and the stint gave them needed exposure and helped the pair to develop their own individual voices. With tenor saxophonist Frank Mitchell and bassist Reggie Workman completing the quintet, this particular version of The Jazz Messengers only had the opportunity to record this one excellent live LP (which is currently out of print) but proved to be a worthy successor to their more acclaimed predecessors. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide | ||

A real curiosity (finding Blakey using organist Malcom Bass as a particularly unlikely sideman), it would not be an understatement to say that this is not one of the more essential Art Blakey recordings. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

The 1968 edition of Blakey's band was a strong if underrated unit consisting of the drummer/leader, trumpeter Bill Hardman, trombonist Julian Priester, tenor saxophonist Billy Harper, pianist Ronnie Mathews and bassist Lawrence Evans. This CD is well-recorded and is highlighted by "Slide's Delight," and Harper's ballad feature on "You Don't Know What Love Is," and a spirited remake of "Moanin." -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

| After a decade of steady recording, Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers found their hard bop music somewhat out-of-fashion by the late '60s; in fact, they only recorded two sessions (both live) between 1967-71. This particular one (a budget LP from Everest) is most unusual for the solos of tenor saxophonist Billy Harper are much more advanced than those of Blakey's usual sidemen. With trumpeter Bill Hardman, trombonist Julian Priester, pianist Ronnie Mathews and bassist Larry Evans completing the group, much of the music on these four selections is actually closer to free jazz than to hard bop, making this one of Blakey's most adventurous sets. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide | ||
