What is Forgiveness? |
From a viewer:
What's your definition of forgiveness? Is forgiveness free or does it come with a high price?
Is it a relinquishment of debt or a repayment of debt? Is it to forgive and
forget, or is it to forgive and remember the debt?
What is forgiveness? Listen to the Author of forgiveness, Heavenly Father.
He says; "And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. Now where redemption of these
is, there is no more offering for sin" (Hebrews 10:17-18). When Heavenly Father forgives, He forgets.
He exacts no debt. He demands no repayment. His forgiveness is free and full.
The exiting thing is that when the Scriptures talk about forgiveness, they emphasize God's forgiveness of us rather
than our responsibility to forgive others. Even more exciting is the fact that the Scriptures say Heavenly
Father forgives us freely.
When you stop and think about it, that is what the word forgiveness really means.
If you owed me $100, and I told you that I forgave you that debt, you would no longer owe one the $100.
In fact, it would be wrong for me to say that I have forgiven you the debt and still
demand payment. Not only would that be confusing, that would be cruel.
God is not cruel. When He tells us He forgives us, He doesn't still demand payment.
"Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin" (Hebrews
10:18). God forgives us because Jesus became our substitute, took the guilt of our sins upon Himself,
and paid for them with His blood. Again, the Scriptures say, "In whom (Jesus) we have redemption
through his blood, the forgiveness of sins" (Ephesians 1:7).
Because of what Jesus has already done for us, we can not only rise from the dead, we can also live with
Heavenly Father for all eternity. Not if or when we ourselves have paid the debt, but because Jesus has
already paid it for us. And we don't have to pay Him back. He freely forgives us that tremendous debt.
That, my friends, is the true miracle of forgiveness.
