In addition to the usual cruise program, the 2009 Mennonite Heritage Cruise will assist and feature a special memorial weekend. 

On Saturday afternoon, October 10th 2009 the International Mennonite Memorial Committee will unveil a monument to Mennonite Victims of the Great Terror and Tribulation in Soviet Times on the main square of the one-time Mennonite village of Upper Khortitsa, the centre of the first settlement of Mennonites in the Russian Empire.

Designer Paul Epp's composite image of the site and approved monument design which has cutouts or silhouettes of the missing women, men and children.
In this image we see through the cutouts to the trees and grasses behind. There will be engraved text on the podium.

The monument will memorialize victims of the tragedy that swept away about a third of all Mennonites in the Soviet Union and tore apart all Mennonite communities.

The weekend of events will include:
- the opening of a special museum exhibit
- the monument unveiling and related ceremonies, including  a solemn simple ceremony of the naming by their descendants of those who perished and the lighting of candles in their memory
- a worship service with Mennonites from four continents participating
