This historically significant CD collects together two sessions led by tenor saxophonist James Moody in 1948 (when he was a member of Dizzy Gillespie's big band) along with drummer Art Blakey's first recording date as a leader. Moody's music features boppish arrangements by Gil Fuller and solos by trumpeter Dave Burns, altoist Ernie Henry and baritonist Cecil Payne while the Blakey set (originally released under the title of Art Blakey's Messengers) features an octet that includes trumpeter Kenny Dorham, altoist Sahib Shihab and pianist Walter Bishop. Classic and formerly rare music. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

    A NIGHT AT BIRDLAND VOL1&2(BLUENOTE1521-1522)
Just prior to forming the first edition of the Jazz Messengers, drummer Art Blakey led a superb quintet at Birdland for a brief gig in 1954. The band featured the great trumpeter Clifford Brown, altoist Lou Donaldson, pianist Horace Silver and bassist Curly Russell in addition to the leader/drummer. All of the music has since been reissued as part of a Clifford Brown box set for Mosaic, but this is the original LP. The first volume is highlighted by "A Night in Tunisia," "Quicksilver" and "Once in a While" and finds all of the participants in inspired form. Classic bop. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
The second volume taken from Art Blakey's pre-Jazz Messengers gig at Birdland features the immortal trumpeter Clifford Brown, altoist Lou Donaldson, pianist Horace Silver, bassist Curly Russell and the leader/drummer romping through the blues "Wee-Dot," two Charlie Parker tunes, an alternate version of "Quicksilver" and a Donaldson ballad feature on "If I Had You." All of the musicians are inspired, none more than Blakey who would soon form The Jazz Messengers as a permanent outlet for his hard-swinging drums. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

This first of two LP volumes features the original version of The Jazz Messengers, the quintet co-led by drummer Art Blakey and pianist Horace Silver that also featured trumpeter Kenny Dorham, Hank Mobley on tenor and bassist Doug Watkins. Caught live, the band stretches out on such numbers as "Soft Winds," ' "Minor's Holiday," "Alone Together" and Dorham's "Prince Albert." Highly enjoyable and still timeless music. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
The second of two LP volumes showcasing the 1955 Jazz Messengers features Art Blakey, Horace Silver, Kenny Dorham, Hank Mobley and Doug Watkins digging into such strong material as Mobley's "Sportin' Crowd," "Avila and Tequila" and three standards. This band has influenced jazz up to the present day and was in fine form for this live appearance. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

    ART BLAKEY & THE JAZZ MESSENGERS(COLUMBIA 897)
The original version of The Jazz Messengers only lasted around a year, cutting four albums before the departure of pianist and chief composer Horace Silver. This LP (which also features trumpeter Donald Byrd, Hank Mobley's tenor and bassist Doug Watkins) is highlighted by the earliest recordings of two of Silver's songs, "Nica's Dream" and "Ecaroh," and plenty of typically hard swinging from the band. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
This CD reissue brings back the music on the earlier LP titled Art Blakey with the Original Jazz Messengers, plus five other selections (just one of which is an alternate) from the same two sessions that were formerly out on imported sets; "Deciphering the Message" was previously unreleased altogether. These were the last recordings by the Art Blakey-Horace Silver Jazz Messengers before pianist Silver went out on his own and the first edition disbanded. Trumpeter Donald Byrd, tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley and bassist Doug Watkins (along with Silver and Blakey) are in excellent form. Silver's "Nica's Dream" is heard here in the original version, and the band is typically hard-swinging throughout the 76-minute-plus program. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

    ORIGINALLY(COLUMBIA-FC38036)
This LP contains valuable performances by the early Jazz Messengers that sat unissued until decades later. Four selections feature the band when drummer Art Blakey and pianist Horace Silver were co-leaders; trumpeter Donald Byrd, Hank Mobley on tenor and bassist Doug Watkins were also in that quintet. Two numbers from June 1956 find Blakey as sole leader of The Messengers for the first time, heading an otherwise unrecorded unit with Byrd and multi-instrumentalist Ira Sullivan. This LP concludes with a humorous Gershwin medley from later in the year with altoist Jackie McLean and trumpeter Bill Hardman in prominent roles. Although not an essential set, Art Blakey fans will find this album to be a valuable gapfiller in the history of The Jazz Messengers. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

This LP features The Jazz Messengers shortly after pianist Horace Silver departed to form his own band. With altoist Jackie McLean and trumpeter Bill Hardman as the key soloists (pianist Sam Dockery and bassist Spanky DeBrest completed the quintet), this group was already a potentially great outfit although its most glorious days were still in the future. Three group originals (including McLean's "Little Melonae") and two standards are performed during this fine set. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

    RITUAL(BLUE NOTE-CDP7468582)
Interesting, uneven '57 date that contains a lengthy drum piece by Blakey. This was not his greatest group, although alto saxophonist Jackie McLean was among the hardest blowers he ever employed. Bassist Spanky Debrest and trumpeter Bill Hardman were good musicians, but a notch below the others who filled their roles in future Messenger editions. -- Ron Wynn, All Music Guide
Following the original all-star version of The Jazz Messengers and preceding the Lee Morgan-Benny Golson band of late 1958, the group that drummer Art Blakey led in 1957 has tended to be overlooked. Featuring altoist Jackie McLean and trumpeter Bill Hardman, this particular outfit soon set the standard for the many versions of The Jazz Messengers that would follow, featuring originals by Blakey's young sidemen, hard-swinging ensembles and increasingly distinctive solos. This hard-to-find LP is worth a search. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

This CD reissues one of the first percussion-oriented jazz records, although it was preceded two weeks earlier by Art Blakey's obscure Columbia set Drum Suite. For the Blue Note date, which was originally released as two LPs and is now available as a single CD, Blakey enlisted quite a lineup -- the leader, Art Taylor, Jo Jones, and Specs Wright on drums (with the latter two doubling on tympani), five percussionists, flutist Herbie Mann, pianist Ray Bryant and bassist Wendell Marshall. Mann plays a variety of African wood flutes, except on the final number, a conventional blues featuring his regular flute. With percussionist Sabu leading the chanting and taking three vocals (Blakey himself sings a little on "Toffi"), the music is quite African-oriented and generally holds one's interest, preceding Max Roach's M'Boom by over 20 years. Mostly for specialized tastes, this is a set that drummers should consider essential. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Already at this early stage, the band was the epitome of hard bop and just beginning to become an influential force. Although none of these six selections (three by tuba player Ray Draper) would become standards, the music is consistently excellent and typically hard swinging. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

One of the rarest of all Art Blakey records, this LP finds The Jazz Messengers (featuring new member Johnny Griffin on tenor and trumpeter Bill Hardman) performing jazz versions of six show tunes by Lerner And Loewe including three ("Almost Like Being in Love," "I Could Have Danced All Night" and "On the Street Where You Live") that would soon become standards. Despite some of the musicians' unfamiliarity with the songs, this date is quite successful and should be reissued on CD someday. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

This is an interesting CD reissue of formerly rare material from the second version of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. The first six selections are the full contents of a long-out-of-print Vik LP which find the Messengers (with tenor-saxophonist Johnny Griffin, trumpeter Bill Hardman, pianist Sam Dockery, bassist Spanky DeBrest and the drummer/leader) playing six songs by Lerner and Loewe including "Almost Like Being in Love," "On the Street Where You Live" and "I Could Have Danced All Night." In addition, the same group is heard on two previously unreleased alternate takes with altoist Jackie McLean (who was actually Griffin's predecessor) making the band a sextet, and there are three numbers (including two "new" takes) from an expanded unit (called "The Jazz Messengers Plus Two") which features such players as a very young Lee Morgan (making his debut with Blakey a year before he joined the group), Hardman, trombonist Melba Liston, Griffin and pianist Wynton Kelly. But rarity aside, the performances should please straightahead jazz fans. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

This CD contains two unique sessions in the history of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. Five numbers feature a sextet that includes both altoist Jackie McLean, who had recently left the band, and his replacement, tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin along with trumpeter Bill Hardman; "A Night in Tunisia" best shows off this short-lived group. The remaining two numbers were unissued until this CD came out and feature Blakey heading a nonet that included future Messenger Lee Morgan, trombonist Melba Liston and Griffin. The music is consistently excellent and also succeeds as a historical curiosity that should greatly interest Blakey collectors. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Drums Around The Corner  (Blue Note CD 21455)

This rare session, finally released in 1999, represents some of the most powerful drumming by Art Blakey, Roy Haynes, and Philly Joe Jones. Gathered together under Blakey's leadership, these three legendary drummers, conga master Ray Barretto, and Lee Morgan, Bobby Timmons, and Jymie Merritt from the Jazz Messengers all converge into a stunning ensemble unlike any that had come before. Each piece not only offers swinging grooves and dynamic interaction between the musicians, but Blakey, Haynes, Jones, and Barretto each take turns propelling the group and soloing in his own signature way.

Blakey's legendary strength, Haynes' snap-crackle-pop, and Jones' melodic invention are all evident as they each produce mesmerizing improvisations, complimenting and topping each other as they go. Whether on Bird's "Moose The Mooche," the free-flowing "Drums In The Rain," or the standard "Lover," the focus here is on the primal energy of the drum and its legitimacy as an essential source of music. Also included are "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm" and "What Is This Thing Called Love," both of which are electrifying duets between Blakey and bassist Paul Chambers. For drumming fans, there is little left to ask for from this priceless collection.

The 1958 version of The Jazz Messengers was widely recorded during their stay in Paris, but this CD does not duplicate any of the other recordings previously released. This band (with trumpeter Lee Morgan, Benny Golson on tenor and pianist Bobby Timmons) was particularly strong, and it is quite enjoyable to hear them stretch out on such songs as "I Remember Clifford," "Moanin'," "Blues March" and "Whisper Not." Hard bop at its best, all of it propelled by the powerful drumming of Art Blakey. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

    DES FEMMES DISPARAISSENT-MOVIE SOUNDTRACK-FONTANA

The bulk of this CD has the soundtrack of a 1958 French film titled Des Femmes Disparaissent. Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers (which at the time consisted of the drummer-leader, trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenor-saxophonist Benny Golson, pianist Bobby Timmons and bassist Jymie Merritt) perform 18 mostly brief sketches that were co-written by Golson and Blakey. Although the music is generally inconclusive and fragmented, fans of the Jazz Messengers will find these performances of some interest. The last five selections are from a different French film of the period, Les Tricherus. One number has Lionel Hampton (on drums) jamming in a quartet with clarinetist Mezz Mezzrow. The other songs have pianist Oscar Peterson, guitarist Herb Ellis, bassist Ray Brown and drummer Gus Johnson joined on one tune apiece by tenor-saxophonist Coleman Hawkins, trumpeters Roy Eldridge and Dizzy Gillespie and tenorman Stan Getz; Eldridge is also part of the Getz track. Of these, Dizzy on "Mic's Jump" fares best. But overall the historical curiosities on this CD are not all that essential. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

LIVE AT THE CLUB ST GERMAIN-RCA-430043
This three-LP box set from French RCA (part of which was reissued on the CD Paris 1958) features the 1958 Jazz Messengers live in Paris stretching out on 11 songs. Trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenor saxophonist Benny Golson and pianist Bobby Timmons formed a potent team, backed up by bassist Jymie Merritt and the powerful drumming of leader Art Blakey. This hard-to-find set gives one a definitive look at the influential band. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Originally part of an 11-song three-LP set, this six-song CD (not counting the 28-second "Theme") features the Lee Morgan-Benny Golson-Bobby Timmons version of The Jazz Messengers stretching out on their "hits" (including "Blues March," "Moanin'" and "Whisper Not"), giving one alternate versions of their studio recordings. This was one of the finest bands of the period, and this CD serves as a perfect introduction to the exciting music of The Jazz Messengers. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

This two-CD set is a logical reissue, combining both volumes (formerly Lp's) of a live performance by Art Blakey and his 1959 Jazz Messengers. Recorded shortly after tenor-saxophonist Benny Golson had left the group, this particular version of Blakey's classic band featured trumpeter Lee Morgan, Hank Mobley on tenor (his only recordings with the band), pianist Bobby Timmons, bassist Jymie Merritt and the drummer-leader. Surprisingly Morgan, Timmons and the departed Golson did not contribute any compositions to the set although there are three Hank Mobley songs. In addition, the band performs songs by Thelonious Monk ("Justice"), Ray Bryant, Randy Weston ("Hi-Fly") and Gildo Mahones plus the standard "Close Your Eyes" and two versions of "The Theme." The music falls short of being essential but hard bop collectors will find much to savor on the twofer. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

An interesting set of music originally recorded as the soundtrack for the French film Les Liaisons Dangereuses, the majority of these tracks feature Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers of mid-1959 with trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenorman Barney Wilen, pianist Boby Timmons and bassist Jymie Merritt joining the explosive drummer/leader. In general, the music manages to stand on its own with the ensemble getting to stretch out a bit on the rare material. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Not released until over 20 years after it was recorded, this set (reissued on CD in 1998 ) features tenor-saxophonist Wayne Shorter in his first recording with The Jazz Messengers. The quintet at the time also featured the great trumpeter Lee Morgan, pianist Walter Davis, Jr., bassist Jymie Merritt and the drummer/leader Art Blakey. The highpoint is easily Shorter's memorable composition "Lester Left Town" (written after Lester Young's passing). Overall, this forgotten session contains plenty of excellent hard bop. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

The version of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers heard on this CD differs from most from the period because pianist Bobby Timmons had just departed to join Cannonball Adderley so Walter Davis, Jr. is in the piano chair. Otherwise the lineup (with trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenor-saxophonist Wayne Shorter, bassist Jymie Merritt and drummer Blakey) is familiar. Performing three standards (including "Night in Tunisia") and two group originals (best-known is one of the earliest versions of Shorter's "Lester Left Town"), the Jazz Messengers are up to their usual high standards; both Morgan and Shorter are in particularly strong form while Davis fits in quite well. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

    THE BIG BEAT-BLUE NOTE 4029
In 1960, Art Blakey led one of the greatest versions of his Jazz Messengers. The particular edition heard on this CD features three distinctive soloists (trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter and pianist Bobby Timmons). Highlights of The Big Beat include Timmons's "Dat Dere" and Shorter's "Lester Left Town" in addition to a colorful arrangement of "It's Only a Paper Moon," heard in two versions. A gem. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Nobody supplied a bigger beat in jazz than Art Blakey. This Blue Note date from 1960, appropriately titled THE BIG BEAT, documents one of the best line-ups that Blakey and his Jazz Messengers ever had. With Lee Morgan and Wayne Shorter on the front line and Bobby Timmons and Jymie Merritt in the rhythm section with Blakey, this group defined hard bop with soulful swing, commanding solos and tight ensemble arrangements. Only Miles Davis and John Coltrane could also claim to lead groups of equally powerful stature.

Wayne Shorter held the spot of musical director during his tenure with the Messengers and he contributes three gems to this session. His shuffling "The Chess Players" opens the album with a slow grooving stroll. The pace is quickened with his bouncing "Sakeena's Vision," featuring a driving solo section and plenty of prodding from Blakey. Also included is Shorter's superb swinger "Lester Left Town" which would become a Messengers performance favorite. Timmons' contribution is his legendary blues "Dat Dere," a gospel-flavored groover that gets a signature performance here. Finally, the standard "It's Only A Paper Moon" is given a daunting new arrangement and an extra bonus take to close out the disc.

Taken from the same sessions that resulted in A Night in Tunisia, this fine CD features the 1960 version of The Jazz Messengers starring trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter and pianist Bobby Timmons. The title cut is the most impressive performance, but this excellent program of high-quality hard bop also allows listeners to hear three obscure Wayne Shorter compositions and Lee Morgan's forgotten "Johnny's Blue." -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

The lengthy title track on this CD easily overshadows the rest of the program for it is one of the most exciting versions ever recorded of Dizzy Gillespie's "A Night in Tunisia." Trumpeter Lee Morgan (then only in his early 20s), tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter, pianist Bobby Timmons and bassist Jymie Merritt formed one of the strongest of the many versions of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and are actually in fine form during the remainder of the satisfying (if anticlimatic) set. The CD augments the LP by adding a version of "When Your Lover Has Gone" and an alternate take of "Sincerely Diana" to the original program. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Art Blakey's 1960 Jazz Messengers recorded so many excellent records that the "good" rating given this LP is relative. With trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter and pianist Bobby Timmons all receiving plenty of solo space, the band is in fine form on Hank Mobley's "The Opener," Lee Morgan's "What Know" and two standards. Little unexpected occurs, but fans of hard-swinging jazz will want to pick up both volumes in this series. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Nearly every recording by Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, particularly during the 1958-61 period, is well worth acquiring by fans of hard bop. This 1995 CD from the Swiss label TCB features a particularly strong edition of Blakey's group, with trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenor-saxophonist Wayne Shorter, pianist Bobby Timmons, bassist Jymie Merritt and the drummer/leader. Together they perform "Now's the Time," two of Shorter's tunes ("Lester Left Town" and "Noise in the Attic"), Morgan's "Kozo's Waltz" and Timmons's recent hit "Dat Dere." The 1960 version of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers (which consisted of the drummer/leader, trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter, pianist Bobby Timmons, and bassist Jymie Meritt) was very well documented. This 1996 CD releases for the first time music from the second half of a Geneva concert by the band. One can argue that these performances of "It's Only a Paper Moon," "'Round Midnight," Wayne Shorter's "The Summit," "A Night In Tunisia" and Timmons' "This Here" do not add that much to the Messengers' vast legacy, but the music is really too good for hard bop fans (even those with many other versions) to pass up. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Recorded from a radio broadcast in Sweden, this LP finds The Jazz Messengers near their peak. This edition of the band (with trumpeter Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter on tenor and pianist Bobby Timmons) was the most celebrated and most frequently recorded of all the versions of The Jazz Messengers. This album (which includes strong versions of "Blues March," "Lester Left Town," "Along Came Betty," "A Night in Tunisia" and Wayne Shorter's lesser-known "The Summit") is easily recommended as a strong example of their legacy. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

    THREE BLIND MICE-BLUE NOTE-VOL1& VOL2-784451-784452
This live set from 1962 features Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers in one of their strongest line-ups. Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter and Curtis Fuller form a stunning front line that is expertly propelled by the rhythm section of Blakey, Cedar Walton and Jymie Merritt. Free from the constraints of the studio, the tight ensemble arrangements for which the group is famous are expanded upon here and performed with even greater energy. As expected, Blakey's driving leadership and assertive drumming incites memorable performances from his men and an enthusiastic response from his audience.

Curtis Fuller's lilting arrangement of the childhood favorite "Three Blind Mice" opens the set with jazzed-up harmonies and explosive comments from Blakey. The standard ballad "Blue Moon" also gets an updated arrangement, this time from Shorter, and a mournful performance by Hubbard in the lead. The original compositions, however, get the most energized readings here as Walton's blistering "Plexis" and Hubbard's "Up Jumped Spring" are the highlights of the set. Also included in this volume are a second take of the latter and a previously unreleased performance of Shorter's "Children Of The Night," one of his most vigorous compositions.

Art Blakey's 1963 Jazz Messengers (which included trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, tenor-saxophonist Wayne Shorter, trombonist Curtis Fuller, pianist Cedar Walton and bassist Reggie Workman in addition to the drummer-leader) was one of his finest. The CD reissue (which adds two songs to the seven on the original Lp) has plenty of strong moments, particularly on "Ping-Pong," Shorter's feature ("I Didn't Know What Time It Was") and the memorable "One By One." This high-quality hard bop session is recommended. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

    A JAZZ MESSAGE-IMPULSE 45
Drummer Art Blakey took time off from his busy schedule as leader of The Jazz Messengers to participate in this quartet session with saxophonist Sonny Stitt, pianist McCoy Tyner and bassist Art Davis. Although this session was under Blakey's leadership, Stitt (on both tenor and alto) emerges as the main soloist, playing his trademark bebop lines with creativity and typical enthusiasm. [A 20-bit remaster of Jazz Message was released in the fall of 1999.] -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

During most of 1961-64 Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers (except for bassist Reggie Workman replacing Spanky DeBrest) managed to keep the same personnel, a remarkable feat when one considers the strong talent (which included trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, trombonist Curtis Fuller, Wayne Shorter on tenor and pianist Cedar Walton). Free for All was this particular group's last recording before Freddie Hubbard went out on his own, and it includes lengthy versions of two Shorter tunes, Hubbard's "The Core" and the standard "Pensativa." Fine music. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Reissued on Fantasy's OJC series, this LP (also available as a CD) finds Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers paying tribute to Japan (where they had toured to great acclaim) on two selections, featuring Art Blakey's cousin as a vocalist on "Wellington's Blues" (a real rarity in The Jazz Messengers' discography) and debuting Curtis Fuller's "The High Priest." With trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, tenorman Wayne Shorter and trombonist Fuller in fine form, this is one of literally dozens of recommended Jazz Messengers recordings. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

    INDESTRUCTABLE-BLUE NOTE 4193-
In 1964, trumpeter Lee Morgan rejoined The Jazz Messengers, replacing his original replacement, Freddie Hubbard. The hard-swinging style of this influential unit remained unchanged with drummer/leader Art Blakey still insisting on distinctive solos and constant new material. Typically, the music on this fine LP consists of five then-recent compositions by bandmembers, one apiece from Morgan, pianist Cedar Walton ("When Love Is New") and tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter and two from trombonist Curtis Fuller. Enjoyable music. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

After six years of very consistent personnel (with only a few gradual changes), Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers in 1965 were in a state of transition. This particular LP found both Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard making farewell appearances on trumpet, pianist John Hicks and bassist Victor Sproles joining up as short-term members and veteran Lucky Thompson being well featured on both tenor and soprano sax. The music is more relaxed than usual but still contains some of that distinctive Jazz Messengers fire. This rare set is worth searching for. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

    BUTTERCORN LADY-LIMELIGHT-82034
Few jazz followers would think of trumpeter Chuck Mangione and pianist Keith Jarrett as former members of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, but in 1966, they both worked in the drummer's classic hard bop unit and the stint gave them needed exposure and helped the pair to develop their own individual voices. With tenor saxophonist Frank Mitchell and bassist Reggie Workman completing the quintet, this particular version of The Jazz Messengers only had the opportunity to record this one excellent live LP (which is currently out of print) but proved to be a worthy successor to their more acclaimed predecessors. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

    HOLD ON IM COMING-LIMELIGHT-4023
One of the few out-and-out commercial recordings made by drummer Art Blakey during his long career, this attempt at jazzing up some pop tunes features so-so arrangements by Tom McIntosh and Melba Liston on such songs as "Hold on, I'm Coming," "Secret Agent Man," "Mame" and "Monday, Monday." A real curiosity (finding Blakey using organist Malcom Bass as a particularly unlikely sideman), it would not be an understatement to say that this is not one of the more essential Art Blakey recordings. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

    MOANIN-ART BLAKEY-LRC9052
This is a particularly obscure live set by Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, one not even listed in most discographies. The 1968 edition of Blakey's band was a strong if underrated unit consisting of the drummer/leader, trumpeter Bill Hardman, trombonist Julian Priester, tenor saxophonist Billy Harper, pianist Ronnie Mathews and bassist Lawrence Evans. This CD is well-recorded and is highlighted by "Slide's Delight," and Harper's ballad feature on "You Don't Know What Love Is," and a spirited remake of "Moanin." -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
After a decade of steady recording, Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers found their hard bop music somewhat out-of-fashion by the late '60s; in fact, they only recorded two sessions (both live) between 1967-71. This particular one (a budget LP from Everest) is most unusual for the solos of tenor saxophonist Billy Harper are much more advanced than those of Blakey's usual sidemen. With trumpeter Bill Hardman, trombonist Julian Priester, pianist Ronnie Mathews and bassist Larry Evans completing the group, much of the music on these four selections is actually closer to free jazz than to hard bop, making this one of Blakey's most adventurous sets. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
